Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church

The Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, as the ordinary form of the administration of the Eastern Churches, comprises the Bishops belonging to the same Church sui iuris, who exercise their pastoral service in the Ukraine and various countries throughout the world (Poland, the United States of America, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, France and the Benelux countries, Great Britain, Germany, Italy). To date there are 51 Bishops – Ordinaries and titulars – who are members of the Synod, and along with the Major Archbishop they constitute the highest body of the Major Archiepiscopal Church. The Synod of Bishops has the task of issuing laws for the whole Church sui iuris, electing the Major Archbishop as well as the Bishops for the eparchies and exarchates both within and beyond the Church’s territory. Furthermore, in accordance with canon 1062 of the Code of Canon Law of the Eastern Churches (CCCO), the Synod of Bishops is the highest tribunal of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church. Synodal life and work solemnly manifest the principal of episcopal collegiality and the unity of the Church.

Structure of the Church:

  • Metropolitans – 7 (4 in the Ukraine);
  • Eparchies – 23 (9 in the Ukraine);
  • Exarchates – 6 (3 in the Ukraine).
