Message of condolence for the death of Hon. David Sassoli,
President of the European Parliament
H. E. Msgr Gintaras Grušas, Archbishop of Vilnius and President of the Council of the European Bishops’ Conferences (CCEE), expresses the condolences and sympathy of the whole Church across Europe to the wife, Alessandra, and children Livia and Giulio, of Hon. David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament, after his untimely death.
Previously a journalist, television presenter and well-known face of the Raiuno news programme, he decided to devote himself to politics in 2009. Elected President of the European Parliament in 2019, he reaffirmed the need for a policy closer to citizens and their needs, especially young people, whilst promoting European values and a special focus on the most disadvantaged.
The European bishops recall his great political and institutional weight, and his commitment as a believer, to dialogue and to serving the common good.
The CCEE Presidency, while renewing its solidarity with the family, friends and collaborators of the Hon. Sassoli, assures of its prayers to the Good Shepherd and Lord of life, that he may welcome him with his mercy and bring him to eternal happiness.
